Over one-quarter of the EU working age population has a chronic disease, with 36% of EU adults over 65 years of age living with multiple chronic diseases, thus increasing their treatment burden. Moreover, patients suffering from chronic and non-communicable diseases often require long-term or even life-long treatment, making adherence to treatment key.
Yet, it is estimated that non- or poor adherence to treatment leads to almost 200,000 lives lost every year in the EU, and costs healthcare systems and society €125 billion. It is therefore essential to put in place measures that will increase therapeutic adherence and allow optimal treatment for patients, fostering better outcomes.
To that end, Servier has developed a position paper which highlights policy proposals that could effectively improve patients’ adherence to treatment. You can access this position paper here.
